Acrylic Painting

Posted On 02-19-2010 , 2:58 PM

Acrylic painting I am realizing is more popular than oil painting here in northern Canada. I have found it difficult to get oil paints in my northern community in comparison with those available for acrylic painting. This is probably due to the slow drying properties, strong fumes, and messy solvents you experience with dealing with oils.

I enjoyed the slow drying process of acrylic painting, as it allowed me to take my time, and easily blend my colors from one day to the next. With acrylic painting, I am finding that I need to be more focused, as it dry sometimes before I am finished with the blending. In many other ways, fast drying mediums are very beneficial. I can complete a canvas in a lot less time, as well as layer my pictures the very same day. As well soap and water is all that is needed to clean up acrylic painting supplies, and I have been able to even get it out of my clothing.

Acrylic painting is also substantially less toxic than oil, but your area should still have a properly vented area for acrylic painting. This for me is probably the most beneficial part, as I get terrible head aches if I’m painting with oils for long periods of time, because of the toxins. Even my roommate commented on the strong oil smell in the house, yet has said nothing about the acrylic painting. I have appreciated the easy clean up of acrylic painting and the low odor after working with oil for a couple months.

I will always love working with oil, but due to the lack of affordable oil paint in my community, and the strong odor of the medium, I am going to work with acrylics for my next couple paintings. Do you like to paint? I would love to hear about your views on oil or acrylic painting.

Oil Paintings

Posted On 01-20-2010 , 12:37 PM

Oil Paintings have always been one of my old fashion passions. The peace and tranquility I have with a brush in hand, allows me to express my feelings through the oil paintings.

Oil Paintings were commonly being seen in 13th century England. By the 15th century, oil was adopted as a medium for painting, and it was becoming increasingly popular. This slow drying paint, often bound with linseed oil, I find is very easy to blend. I find the length of drying time, usually a few weeks, allows me to take my time with my oil paintings. With no urgency to finish, I have more time explore my ideas and thoughts, thus helping me to get my feelings expressed.

I have found that my old paint brushes seem to be producing a better result than my new ones. I am currently painting a landscape scene, and as nothing is perfect in nature, using an old, beat up brush seems to give me more realistic scene. My fan brush seems to be my favorite when creating oil paintings. It seems to work best for clouds, water, and grass. I have found there are many online u tube videos showing how to use different brushes to create different textures.

Sometimes my oil paintings need more of a shine or gloss to have a finished touch. I found varnish the easiest product to use, but many use turpentine or a white spirit to achieve this. Sometimes with oil paintings, I find the clean up to be lengthy. With acrylics for example, they can easily be cleaned with soap and water, oil paintings need paint thinner or a chemical similar to clean things up. But despite the cleaning, l continue to enjoy the peace and joy of creating oil paintings. Do you have an old fashion passion for oil paintings?

Silk Screen Printing

Posted On 06-17-2009 , 9:02 PM

Silk screen printing is a stencil method of print making. I was looking through an old photo album and found a picture, similar to the picture on the side, of silk screen printing project I did while in school. It was delightful to be reminded of a different way to express your passion for art. A design in ink is laid on a screen of silk, or any other fine mesh. It is known commonly now as screen printing, as silk is rarely used these days.

Silk screen printing is more versatile than other traditional printing techniques, and is used in a vast variety of industries, as it can be used to work with a variety of materials, such as wood, paper, glass, plastic, metal, textiles, and ceramics. The silk screen printing project I completed was designed on canvas. It was a picture of a moose walking through the night, with the northern lights shining on him. It was a very colourful silk screen printing, and I found the process of silk screen printing very rewarding and not to difficult to learn.

There is a magestic melody of screen printing art for sale, in any material, and many guides to do it yourself projects. There are many different methods and processes you can take, and many different mediums may be used, but as we each have to find our own old fashion passions, we each have to obtain our favourite method.  I enjoy hearing how others have experienced silk screen printing, and I would be interested in learning more about this field.  Do you have an old fashion passion for silk screen printing?

Vintage Art Passions Blog

My vintage art passions are broad, as many artists are inspiring, and their work so enchanting. Such personal expression of emotion strikes my vintage art passions.

An artist that has sparked my old fashion passions is Claude Monet. Claude Monet, Nov. 1840- Dec. 1926, was a French painter, and loved to paint his surroundings, just as they were. He was one of the founders of French Impressionist painting, and the term impressionism, came from his work. He has inspired many, including me, with his beautiful use of color and his unique style. Monet was first known for his incredible talent using charcoal, but later was inspired by other artists, and ventured into oil painting, using vast varieties of color. He surrounded himself with beautiful gardens, which he tended to, spending much of his time creating his own masterpieces. He would then proceed to paint the beautiful scene he created. Monet, surpassing in his work, is at the top of my list of vintage art passions.

The Paintings of Monet's gardens are very enchanting, and have inspired me to pick up a brush, and begin to paint again. It had been a couple years since I have done any painting, or reminded my self of my vintage art passions. I have always enjoyed discovering my vintage art passions, and viewing work such as Monet, reminds me to let my emotions flow into my brush. The surroundings I have created for my self spark emotions within me, as Monet’s gardens did for him. I find it wise to find our passions, whether they are old fashion passions, vintage art passions, vintage lovelies, or what ever it is you desire, or admire, and pursue it. Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.” Monet’s courage to venture into his inspirations, surround him self with beauty, and share it with the world, can inspire anyone. Are there any vintage art passions that inspire you? Any time I look at Monet’s fascinating work, I am reminded it’s okay to travel where there is no path, as I am discovering my own. Do you have any vintage art passions?

Are there any artists that spark your emotions, or encourage you to try something new or different? What is your opinion on Claude Monet’s work? Is he one of your vintage art passions? I am hoping to find others with that wish to share about their old fashion passions, and their vintage art passions.

Old Fashion Passions Blog

My old fashion passions have been delighting to discover. History holds lasting, and remarkable memories, of a vast variety of vintage lovelies. I enjoy rekindling my unique, and enchanting, old fashion passions.

Our old fashion passions, that we love so much, often are left in the past to be forgotten. Oliver Wendell Holmes once said, “Love is the master key which opens the gates of happiness.” Always searching for more ways to enjoy, and be fulfilled with happiness in my life, I have found that finding, and obtaining vintage lovelies, has sparked many of my old fashion passions. I have always admired striking, and distinguished products. One of my many old fashion passions is 1800's art. Delivered in various ways, the expression of so many of the artists of our past time, capture my mind, eyes, and heart. A vast variety of artists were exquisitely paramount during their period of origin. Still today, such artists rekindle such delight and inspiration for me. I find it important to hold on to our own individual style, and desires, allowing each of us to share our individual melody of interests. I continue searching for more of my old fashion passions.

One of the latest old fashion passions I have been touched by, as I searched vintage work is an oil on canvas painting, created by Vincent Van Gogh.  Vincent Van Gogh, a Dutch Post Impressionist artist, has become one of the most popular and expensive artists of all time. He painted a picture called, “Memories of the Garden at Etten (Ladies of Arles), in 1888. The exquisite, and elegant design of this picture, inspires me to venture outside structure, and helps me to allow my own creativeness to shine. Mother Teresa once said, “It is not how much we do, but how much love we put in the doing. It is not how much we give, but how much love we put in the giving.” Using the inspiration we get from delighting ourselves with our old fashion passions, we all are able to put the love into the things we do, and into the things we share.

I am hoping to discover some of your old fashion passions. It is always more enjoyable sharing with others, what delights and fascinates us. I hope we can continue to inspire each other, with our old fashion passions.
