Vintage bicycles, the first human powered means of transportation, were introduced in the nineteenth century. Typically, a bicycle is described as a single track vehicle, pedal driven, with two wheels attached to support a frame. Invented by German, Baron Karl von Drais, vintage bicycles were introduced to the public in 1817. The rider sat astride a wooden frame, supported by two wheels in line, and moved by the pushing of their feet. Multiple innovators added to the development of the vintage bicycles. In 1860, two French innovators, Pierre Michaux, and Pierre Lallement, added a mechanical crank drive with pedals on the velocipede, the enlarged front wheel. Following inventions were the rear wheel drive, called rod driven velocipede. Then tubular steel frames were supported with wire spoked wheels, with solid rubber tires. Many found at the time that these vintage bicycles were difficult to ride, as they had poor weight distribution, thus the invention of the Drarf. The seat on the Drarf was placed further back, and the front wheel was decreased in size, helping to solve this problem. Around 1885, the first chain driven model was introduced.  As society continued to advance, so did the styles and designs for more specific uses.

By the 1890’s vintage bicycles were becoming a voluminous craze. The 1890’s became known as “The Golden Age of Bicycles”. This exceptional means of transport was admired and desired by men, women, young, and mature, from all over the world. As vintage bicycles rapidly exploded on to the market, the pneumatic tire was introduced, as well as the rear free wheel. By 1898, coaster breaks emerged, and gears and cable pull breaks were being developed. As the 1900’s approached, it was obvious that they were much more than just a means of transport.
